“Yuvraj Singh’s Mentorship Made Shubman Gill a Captain”: Yograj Singh

Former India cricketer Yograj Singh credits Shubman’s father and Yuvraj Singh for shaping the young leader’s cricketing journey.

Shimla, May 25: As Shubman Gill steps into the role of India’s Test captain ahead of the high-stakes series against England, his journey to leadership has drawn praise from former India cricketer Yograj Singh. Speaking to media, Yograj singled out the guiding forces behind Gill’s meteoric rise: his father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, and India legend Yuvraj Singh.

“The credit for Shubman Gill’s performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” Yograj said. “If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played an essential role in that,” he added.

Yograj, himself a former international cricketer and father of Yuvraj Singh, lauded the impact of Yuvraj’s mentorship on Gill’s development. “Someone like Yuvraj Singh, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing,” he said.

At just 25, Shubman Gill has become one of India’s youngest Test captains in modern history. Although he has captained in T20Is, leading India in a five-match series in Zimbabwe in 2024 and Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL, the England series will be his biggest red-ball test yet.

Gill has already built an impressive Test resume, scoring 1,893 runs in 32 matches, including five centuries. He has also served as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is, and was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in India’s triumphant Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE earlier this year.

With the backing of mentors like Yuvraj and the foundational support from his father, Gill’s leadership qualities and technical brilliance have him poised to lead India’s next generation. As he takes charge of India’s Test team, expectations are high that Gill will continue the proud legacy of Indian batting greats.

India’s Test Squad for the England Series:
