Leeds [UK], June 21: India’s batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal unveiled the preparation, mindset, and tactical inputs that powered his magnificent century on debut in England, as he struck a commanding 101 off 158 balls on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley.
Jaiswal’s knock was laced with confidence, class, and control against a pace attack missing English stalwarts James Anderson and Stuart Broad. The innings added a unique feather to his cap—he has now scored Test hundreds on debut in three different countries: West Indies, Australia, and now England.
Speaking to Star Sports, the 23-year-old left-hander credited his partner KL Rahul for strategic insights during their innings.
“KL Rahul is very experienced. Talking to him helped me understand where to score runs and how to build an innings. We did a lot of preparation with India A as well, and that helped us understand each other,” Jaiswal shared.
The young batter’s preparations included two unofficial Tests against England Lions, a training camp in Beckenham, and an intra-squad match—all key in helping him adapt to English conditions before the big stage.
“We did a lot of preparation before coming here. It was fun and insightful. I enjoyed it and learned a lot,” he added.
Outlining his mindset, Jaiswal emphasized mental readiness and building a platform for the team.
“I try to give myself more time and stay mentally prepared. I always tell myself to keep playing and manage whatever situation arises. My goal is to bat deep if I’m set.”
Jaiswal’s innings came to an end at the hands of England skipper Ben Stokes, who produced a sharp delivery that seamed in and uprooted the stumps as Jaiswal attempted a drive.
Despite his dismissal, India ended Day 1 strongly, with captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant stitching an unbeaten 138-run stand, putting India in a commanding position at a venue where they last won in 2002.
