Yamuna Water Dispute: Kejriwal, Atishi, And Bhagwant Mann To Meet Election Commission Today

New Delhi [India], January 31: Chief Minister Atishi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is set to meet with the Election Commission of India (ECI) today to discuss the ongoing dispute over the Yamuna River water.

This meeting follows a notice issued to Kejriwal by the ECI, requesting evidence to back his claims that the Haryana government has “poisoned” the water supply to Delhi. The controversy has escalated as Kejriwal accused the BJP-led Haryana government of deliberately contaminating the water, a claim that has become a focal point in Delhi’s political landscape.

The ECI has given Kejriwal a deadline of 11 am today to provide factual evidence supporting his allegations. The Commission had previously responded to Kejriwal, asking him not to conflate the issue of increased ammonia levels in the Yamuna with his more serious accusations of mass poisoning, which he likened to an act of war. The ECI requested specific details, including the type, quantity, and manner of poisoning, as well as information on the engineers and methods used to detect the contamination by the Delhi Jal Board. If Kejriwal fails to provide the requested evidence, the Commission will take further action.

Kejriwal’s allegations, made earlier this week, claimed that the Haryana government had intentionally poisoned the water to cause mass fatalities in Delhi, framing it as a plot to discredit the AAP. His statement has sparked a major political row, with BJP leaders strongly criticizing him.

As the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections approach, the political atmosphere is heating up, with the AAP, BJP, and Congress exchanging accusations. In the 2020 elections, AAP secured a sweeping victory, winning 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP managed only eight seats.
