Yamuna Water Row Escalates As Leaders Clash Over Kejriwal’s ‘Poison’ Remarks

With just days left for the Delhi Assembly elections, the Yamuna river pollution issue has triggered a heated political battle. The controversy erupted after Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP-led Haryana government of poisoning the Yamuna River, a claim that has drawn sharp responses from political opponents.

Pappu Yadav: “AAP’s Thoughts Are Poisonous, Not the Water”

Independent MP Pappu Yadav launched a scathing attack on AAP, calling its governance toxic for Delhiites.

  • “It is not the water that has become poisonous, but AAP’s thoughts and character that have turned toxic for the common man,” he said.
  • He accused Kejriwal of misleading Delhi’s citizens for electoral gains.

BJP Hits Back: “AAP’s Disastrous Governance”

BJP’s Malviya Nagar candidate Satish Upadhyay also slammed AAP:

  • “For 11 years, Delhi has faced only disasters under AAP. These dishonest leaders lie to the public. Now that their ground is slipping, they are blaming Haryana. They should be ashamed.”

Haryana CM Drinks Yamuna Water to Counter Claims

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini dismissed Kejriwal’s claims as fearmongering for political mileage.

  • In a symbolic move, Saini took a sip from the Yamuna to prove the water was not contaminated.
  • He condemned Kejriwal’s remarks as “an unfortunate attempt to create fear in the minds of people.”

Kejriwal Defends Statement in Election Commission Response

In a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Kejriwal justified his remarks, stating:

  • “My statements were made in furtherance of an imperative public duty, highlighting the severe toxicity of raw water from Haryana, which poses a direct threat to public health.”

Yamuna River: A Key Election Issue

  • The pollution of Yamuna has been a long-standing issue in Delhi.
  • In December 2024, large portions of the river were covered in toxic foam, highlighting severe contamination.
  • Political parties are now using the issue to attack each other ahead of the February 5 elections.

With Delhi’s elections just days away, the Yamuna water row has become a flashpoint, with AAP, BJP, and independent leaders using it to woo voters. Will the issue sway public opinion, or is this just another election-time war of words? February 5 will decide.
