Yamuna River Inches Towards Danger Mark, Delhi on Flood Alert

August 8, 2025: The water level in the Yamuna River in Delhi is quickly getting close to the danger point, so officials have warned people about the possibility of a flood. The water level at the Old Railway Bridge reached 205.10 meters on Friday at 8 am, which is only a few millimeters below the danger level of 205.33 meters.

A day before, the river had already gone over the alert level of 204.50 meters. As a result, all of the agencies involved are on high alert. Officials are making announcements along the riverbanks to let the about 12,000 people who live in low-lying areas know what’s going on. Sub-divisional magistrates are also keeping a close eye on the issue.

A flood management report says that the water levels are rising because the Hathnikund and Wazirabad Barrages are releasing a lot of water: 24,613 cusecs and 46,290 cusecs, respectively. Water that comes out of these barrages usually takes 48 to 50 hours to get to the capital. Officials have said that if the water level goes above 206 meters, people will be moved to safe regions. It reminds me of 2023, when the Yamuna rose to an all-time high of 208.66 meters, creating flooding all over the place.
