Yamuna River Floods Delhi, Inundating Major Areas and Halting Life

The Yamuna River in Delhi continues to flow above the danger mark, causing widespread flooding across the national capital. The overflowing water has inundated numerous areas, including the Civil Lines, where vehicles, buildings, and even staircases to an overhead bridge have been submerged. According to official data, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge stood at 207.48 meters between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Thursday.

Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure

The floodwaters have reached as far as the Delhi Secretariat and have submerged key areas like Yamuna Bazar and Monastery Market. Shopkeepers and vendors in Monastery Market, anticipating a further rise in water levels, began moving their stock early in the morning. Many are still recalling the similar scenes they experienced during the 2023 floods.

Relief camps set up for evacuees near Mayur Vihar Phase-1 have also been flooded, forcing people to seek other safe places. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has reported that the road leading to the Yamuna Bank Metro Station is inaccessible due to the high water levels, advising commuters to find alternative routes.

The floods have also severely impacted essential services. The Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest and busiest cremation ground, has been forced to halt operations after floodwaters gushed in, reaching the main pyre. The Geeta Colony crematorium is also flooded, and staff report extensive damage and a lack of administrative assistance.

Displacement and Weather Forecast

Authorities had previously relocated thousands of people from low-lying areas near the river. The revenue department reported that 8,018 people have been shifted to temporary tents, and 2,030 have been moved to 13 permanent shelters. In addition to the flooding, a portion of a flyover on National Highway 44 under the Alipur police station caved in on Thursday following incessant rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted thunderstorms with rain for Thursday, followed by a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain on Friday, September 5th.
