Jharkhand Man Walks Same Day After World’s First Cementless Robotic Knee Replacement In Delhi

New Delhi — In a groundbreaking medical feat, Brij Kishor, a 54-year-old man from Dhanbad, Jharkhand, who had been suffering from severe knee pain and joint deformities for more than eight years, walked on the same day after undergoing a robot-assisted cementless medial pivot total knee replacement surgery at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket.

Eight Years of Suffering Ends in a Day

Kishor had tried several forms of treatment, from homoeopathy to consultations in Kolkata, but found no lasting relief. When he arrived in Delhi, his condition had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer walk without support.

On June 23, a team led by Dr Sujoy Bhattacharjee, Chairman of Max Institute of Robotic Joint Replacement, performed the surgery using the CUVIS robotic system—a highly advanced, AI-powered platform for orthopedic precision.

A Global First in Robotic Joint Surgery

According to the hospital, Kishor was diagnosed with advanced osteoarthritis in both knees, along with complex deformities like varus (bow-legged) and flexion (bent-knee) contractures.

“This is a global first in robotic joint replacement,” said Dr Bhattacharjee.
“The precision enabled by the robot and the use of a cementless medial pivot cruciate-retaining (CR) implant results in faster recovery, a more natural joint feel, and improved long-term outcomes.”

Unlike traditional implants that use bone cement, the cementless implant encourages natural bone growth, enhancing joint stability and biological integration.

Walking the Same Day

Remarkably, Kishor was able to walk with assistance on the very same day of the operation. Within a few days, he was walking independently, and as per the doctors, his confidence and mobility were “fully restored.”

“He was barely able to walk before surgery. But on the day of the operation itself, he managed to walk with assistance,” Dr Bhattacharjee said.
“Within just a few days, he was walking independently with renewed confidence.”

A Leap for Joint Replacement in India

The success of this innovative procedure not only offers a new lease on life for patients suffering from chronic joint pain but also places India at the forefront of robotic orthopedic surgery on the global map.
