World Environment Day 2025: Annu Kapoor, PM Modi Urge Citizens To Act For A Greener Future

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 5: On the occasion of World Environment Day, veteran actor Annu Kapoor called on citizens to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and preserving the environment.

Kapoor emphasized, “We should not pollute the environment and keep the surroundings clean by avoiding certain things, such as spitting on the road. No government can solve every individual’s problem — we must care for our homes and our surroundings ourselves.”

Echoing the sentiment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings via social media, urging people to deepen their commitment to environmental protection. “Let’s deepen our efforts towards protecting our planet… I also compliment all those working at the grassroots to make our environment greener and better,” his post read.

Two New Ramsar Sites in Rajasthan Added

Highlighting India’s growing commitment to ecological preservation, PM Modi noted the addition of Khichan (Phalodi) and Menar (Udaipur) to the list of Ramsar Sites — internationally recognized wetlands. With these additions, India now boasts 91 Ramsar sites nationwide.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav praised the development, calling it “a testament to PM Modi’s focus on environmental conservation and a greener tomorrow.”

India currently has Ramsar-designated wetlands in over 20 states, with Tamil Nadu leading the count at 20. Key wetlands include Kanjirankulam Bird Sanctuary and Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest.

Ramsar Sites are part of a global treaty signed in Ramsar, Iran, that aims to conserve and sustainably use wetlands as ecosystems crucial to biodiversity and climate resilience.
