Baghpat (Uttar Pradesh) [India]: At least five people lost their lives, and around 40 others were injured after a wooden structure collapsed during a Jain community event, ‘Laddu Mahotsav,’ in Baraut city, Baghpat, on Tuesday.
District Magistrate Asmita Lal confirmed the fatalities and provided updates on the injured, stating, “The program has been carried out annually for the last 30 years. Unfortunately, the wooden structure collapsed, injuring about 40 people. While 20 were discharged after treatment, the remaining 20 are still hospitalized. Five lives have been lost in this tragic incident.”
Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya added that rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from the police, administration, and fire departments actively working at the site. He noted that 2-3 individuals are in critical condition and are receiving intensive care.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, directed officials to expedite relief and rescue efforts, and ensure proper medical treatment for the injured. He also conveyed wishes for their speedy recovery.
The incident has cast a shadow over the ‘Laddu Mahotsav,’ an event celebrated for decades, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures during large gatherings.
