England fast bowler Mark Wood missed training on Saturday, raising serious concerns about his availability for the second Ashes Test as he continues to struggle with his longstanding left-knee problem.
Wood, 35, had been under watch even before the start of the five-match series, having only recently returned to cricket following knee surgery in March—the eighth operation of his injury-ridden career. Throughout training sessions this month, he has been seen bowling with heavy strapping on his left leg.
According to team sources, Wood is not expected to be fit in time for the opening day of the second Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday. However, England remain hopeful that he could feature later in the Ashes, depending on how his recovery progresses.
Australia currently leads the series 1–0, following an eight-wicket victory in Perth with three days to spare. Wood bowled only 11 overs in that match, finishing with figures of 0–44, further highlighting concerns about his physical readiness.
As England contemplate their bowling combinations for the crucial Gabba Test, Wood’s potential absence could force the team to rethink their pace attack in a bid to level the series.
