According to the South China Morning Post, an 82-year-old woman from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, was hospitalized after ingesting eight little live frogs in an effort to ease chronic lower back discomfort caused by a ruptured disc.
The old woman, whose last name was Zhang, had been having trouble with a herniated disc for a long time. She urged her family to collect live frogs because she thought eating them would help her feel better, based on a traditional treatment she had heard about.
“My mom ate eight live frogs.” Her son told physicians that the intense pain had made her unable to walk.
A medical exam showed that her digestive system was very damaged. Doctors identified parasitic infections, such as sparganum, and a big rise in oxyphil cells, which can be a sign of many health problems, such as blood disorders and parasitic infections.
A hospital spokeswoman told the reporters, “Swallowing frogs has hurt the patient’s digestive system and caused some parasites to be in her body.”
This event shows how dangerous it is to use traditional cures that haven’t been checked up. There is no medical proof that eating live frogs can help with back pain, and doing so can be quite dangerous for your health, as it can lead to parasite infections and intestinal problems.
