Bengaluru: A woman who spent nine agonising months fighting for her life after allegedly being injected with mercury by her husband has died in Attibele, Karnataka, around 28 km from Bengaluru.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed on November 23 at the Attibele Police Station after the victim, Vidya, provided a detailed statement to authorities—just before her condition deteriorated critically.
Injected With Mercury on Shivaratri, Fought for Life for Months
According to her dying declaration, Vidya had married Basavaraj on May 18, 2025. She stated that from the very start of their marriage, she endured continuous mental harassment and humiliation from both her husband and father-in-law, Mariswamachari.
She alleged that her husband routinely called her “mad,” locked her inside their home, refused to take her to family gatherings, and subjected her to regular verbal abuse. The couple also has a four-year-old child.
On the night of February 26, Vidya went to sleep but woke up only the next evening, feeling severe pain in her right thigh, as though she had been injected with something. As her condition worsened, she sought treatment at Attibele Government Hospital on March 7, after which she was referred to Oxford Hospital for further evaluation.
Doctors Confirm Mercury Poisoning
At Oxford Hospital, doctors ran multiple tests and detected mercury poisoning in her body. They performed surgery and sent tissue samples for analysis, which confirmed the presence of mercury. She remained under treatment there for over a month before being shifted to Victoria Hospital.
Doctors at Victoria Hospital informed her that the poison had spread across her body, causing severe damage to several organs, including her kidneys. Vidya was placed on dialysis but remained in a critical state.
Accusations Against Husband and Father-in-Law
In her statement to the police, Vidya accused her husband Basavaraj and father-in-law Mariswamachari of injecting mercury into her body intentionally, with the purpose of killing her.
Despite months of medical treatment, Vidya eventually succumbed to the effects of mercury poisoning in November—nine months after the alleged attack.
Her dying declaration now forms the basis of the FIR, and further investigation is underway.
