Washington DC [US], July 11: Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran recently revealed that his wife, Cherry Seaborn, plays a key role in shaping his music — often deciding which songs make the cut. Speaking on Kylie Kelce’s podcast Not Gonna Lie, Sheeran admitted, “Cherry can kill a song,” highlighting how seriously he takes her opinion.
“I’m actually really careful to play her songs when she’s in a good mood. Because if she’s like, ‘Eh,’ then in my mind, I’m like, ‘Okay. That song’s dead,’” Sheeran said, as quoted by People. He noted that Cherry has an instinctive sense for what works musically, helping him sift through the dozens of tracks he creates weekly.
The Grammy winner’s upcoming album Play, slated for release in September, includes songs Cherry directly influenced. Among them are “Azizam,” “Sapphire,” and the chart-topping “Shivers.” She was also the first to spot the potential in his 2021 hit “Bad Habits,” encouraging him to finish it the day after he wrote it.
“She’s got a very good read on stuff,” Sheeran added. He also mentioned that his young daughters, Lyra Antarctica (4) and Jupiter (2), share their mom’s musical instincts. When Sheeran is away on tour, Cherry plays his songs to the kids, giving him insight into what connects with listeners across generations.
Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn, childhood acquaintances, reconnected in 2015 and married in an intimate ceremony in 2018. Their close-knit family dynamic now plays a defining role in the artist’s creative process.
