Why Arthritis Pain Worsens in Winter and How Simple Daily Habits Can Help Manage It

The winter season often brings a range of health challenges due to falling temperatures and changing weather conditions. From dry skin to seasonal infections, the cold months can be tough on the body. One major concern during winter is joint health, as conditions like arthritis tend to worsen, causing increased pain, stiffness and swelling.

Health experts explain that cold weather directly affects muscles and joints. According to Dr Rohit Khuranna, senior physiotherapist at Silverstreak Superspeciality Hospital, low temperatures cause muscles and connective tissues to tighten, which significantly increases joint stiffness and discomfort in arthritis patients.

Another contributing factor is reduced physical activity during winter. People tend to stay indoors and move less, which can make joints stiffer and worsen pain. Dr Khuranna emphasised that staying gently active is key to managing arthritis flare-ups during this season.

He advised that simple daily habits and light, consistent movements can help keep the joints fluid and reduce discomfort. Rather than focusing on intense workouts, regular gentle exercises and routine movement play a crucial role in easing winter-related arthritis pain.

By maintaining mobility and adopting mindful daily practices, individuals with arthritis can better manage their symptoms and protect their joint health even during the colder months.
