Why Aditya Dhar Rejected Tamannaah Bhatia for “Shararat” in Dhurandhar

While the spy thriller Dhurandhar continues its record-breaking run at the box office, a new revelation has surfaced regarding its hit dance number, “Shararat.” Choreographer Vijay Ganguly recently shared that while he initially pushed for Tamannaah Bhatia to lead the song, director Aditya Dhar stepped in to veto the choice.

Story Over “Item Song” Tropes

In a high-profile Karachi wedding sequence within the film, the song features actors Ayesha Khan and Krystle D’Souza. Ganguly revealed to Filmygyan that his first choice was Tamannaah, but Aditya Dhar had a very specific creative reason for declining.

“Aditya was very clear that he did not want what people call an ‘item song’—something that went out of the story,” Ganguly explained. “If it were just about one girl, it would have taken attention away from the plot. If it were Tamannaah, it would’ve been about her and not the story.”

Dhar’s vision was to maintain the film’s gritty momentum without a “cut-to” song that felt like a standalone music video. By casting two dancers instead of one major star, the director ensured the sequence felt like an organic part of the wedding atmosphere rather than a celebrity cameo.

A Global Phenomenon

The decision seems to have worked, as the soundtrack—including the viral hits Fa9la and the Dhurandhar title track—is currently topping charts. The film itself has become a cinematic juggernaut, crossing the ₹800 crore mark worldwide.

Starring Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, and R. Madhavan, Dhurandhar follows an Indian operative infiltrating the underworld of Lyari, Pakistan. The film’s success has been so massive that filmmakers like Sanjay Gupta have noted it “dwarfs” other recent releases.
