White House Confirms Trump’s Aggressive Tariffs On Canada, Mexico, And China

The White House confirmed on Friday that President Donald Trump will impose aggressive tariffs this weekend on major US trading partners, including Canada, China, and Mexico.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, announced that Trump will implement 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, along with a 10% duty on China. She stated that the move is a response to these countries allegedly sourcing and distributing illegal fentanyl into the US.

“25% tariffs on Mexico, 25% tariffs on Canada, and a 10% tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sent to our country, which has killed 10s of millions of Americans,” Leavitt declared.

Dismissing media reports that the tariffs would take effect on March 1, Leavitt clarified that Trump plans to enforce them starting February 1.

“These are promises made and promises kept by the president,” she said. “Those tariffs will be for public consumption in about 24 hours tomorrow, so you can read them then.”

Trump has repeatedly stated that he will move forward with his tariff plans against Canada and Mexico on February 1. During his campaign, he had also threatened tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese goods but initially delayed any immediate action upon returning to the White House, opting to have his administration study the issue.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed that Canada will respond to any US tariffs with a firm but measured approach.

“If the president does choose to implement any tariffs against Canada, we’re ready with a response — a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response,” Trudeau told reporters before a meeting with his advisory council on Canada-US relations, as reported by The Globe and Mail.
