WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that could allow users to share Status updates with a limited group of contacts, offering greater control over who gets to see specific posts. Much like Instagram’s Close Friends feature, the option is expected to enable more private sharing without the need to adjust Status privacy settings every time.
The feature is currently under development and is likely to be rolled out first to beta testers before becoming available to all users. If introduced, it could significantly enhance WhatsApp’s Status experience by making it easier to share personal moments with a smaller, trusted audience.
Close Friends Ring Indicator Spotted in WhatsApp Beta
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the Close Friends functionality for Status updates was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.5.13. While WhatsApp has not officially confirmed a release date, the feature is expected to appear for beta users first, followed by a wider rollout.
Reports suggest that WhatsApp has been working on custom contact lists for Status updates, allowing users to categorise contacts instead of repeatedly changing privacy settings. Building on this capability, the platform is now reportedly developing a dedicated Close Friends list designed specifically for private Status sharing.
How the WhatsApp Close Friends Feature May Work
Users are expected to have two ways to manage their Close Friends list:
- Selecting contacts directly through Status privacy settings
- Managing the list from within the Status screen itself
WhatsApp is also likely to allow users to edit the Close Friends list at any time, though changes would only apply to future Status updates, not previously shared ones.
Special Ring Indicator for Close Friends Status
One of the standout elements of the feature is a distinct coloured ring around the user’s profile picture. According to WABetaInfo, contacts included in the Close Friends list will see this ring when viewing a Status update, clearly indicating that the post was shared privately. This visual cue mirrors the Close Friends indicator already used on Instagram Stories.
More Premium Features Reportedly in the Pipeline
In addition to the Close Friends feature, recent reports suggest that WhatsApp is also developing an optional subscription plan. This plan could unlock exclusive features such as premium stickers, custom themes, and additional chat pinning options, though details remain limited at this stage.
