West Bengal Govt Seeks Death Penalty In RG Kar Rape Case, Calcutta HC To Hear On January 27

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 22: The West Bengal government has approached the Calcutta High Court’s Division Bench, challenging the trial court’s life imprisonment verdict for Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The next hearing is scheduled for January 27.

Advocate General Kishore Dutta filed the appeal before the Division Bench of Justice Debangshu Basak, requesting the death penalty for Roy. The bench has allowed the appeal to proceed.

Earlier, the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 for the rape and murder of a woman at RG Kar Hospital.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, stating that if the case had been handled by the Kolkata Police, they would have ensured the death penalty. She added that the police had successfully ensured capital punishment in three other cases through thorough investigations within 54-60 days.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father has rejected the Rs 17 lakh compensation offered by the court, stating he will approach a higher court for the death penalty for the accused. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the investigation and the role of Kolkata Police, emphasizing that he seeks justice, not compensation.
