Washington DC [US], July 18: Wes Anderson’s latest cinematic creation, ‘The Phoenician Scheme’, will begin streaming on Peacock from July 25, following its critically acclaimed theatrical run, Deadline reported.
The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to a 7½-minute standing ovation, was released in Indian cinemas on June 20, 2025. It marks Anderson’s third collaboration with Focus Features, following Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and Asteroid City (2023).
‘The Phoenician Scheme’ follows the story of Zsa-zsa Korda, a reclusive billionaire played by Benicio del Toro, who becomes the target of governments, tycoons, terrorists, and assassins. As chaos surrounds him, he appoints his estranged daughter—now a nun, portrayed by Mia Threapleton—as the sole heir to his estate, inadvertently dragging her into a globe-trotting saga of intrigue and danger.
The film features an all-star ensemble including Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Box Office Performance:
- Limited release (NYC & LA): $560K USD opening weekend with a $93.4K per-theatre average, the highest in 2025 to date.
- Wide release second weekend: $6.2M USD, finishing with $19.2M domestic and $37.4M worldwide.
While it fell slightly short of Asteroid City’s performance ($28.1M domestic, $53.8M worldwide), critics praised Del Toro’s commanding portrayal. As noted by Deadline, “The film belongs lock, stock and barrel to Benicio del Toro,” citing his adept delivery of Anderson’s signature dialogue.
With its move to streaming, ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ is expected to reach a broader audience and continue its impact beyond the big screen.
