Durgapur (West Bengal): A 23-year-old woman student of a private medical college in West Bengal’s Durgapur was allegedly gangraped by three unidentified men outside her college campus on Friday night, police said on Saturday.
The second-year MBBS student, a native of Jaleswar in Odisha, was out for dinner around 8:30 pm with a male friend when the incident occurred. Police said the men attacked the duo, and while her friend managed to escape, the woman was abducted and gangraped.
She is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital, while efforts are underway to identify and arrest the culprits.
What the Investigation Has Found So Far
An initial probe suggests that the student and her friend stepped out of the campus between 8 and 8:30 pm on Friday. According to a police officer, the friend left the spot briefly when the accused approached her.
“The men snatched her mobile phone and took her to a nearby jungle, where they raped her. They also threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident,” the officer said.
The accused reportedly demanded money from the victim to return her phone. The survivor’s statement has been recorded, and police are examining CCTV footage from the area. A forensic team will visit the crime scene to collect evidence.
The student’s parents arrived in Durgapur on Saturday morning after being informed by one of her friends.
“We sent our daughter here because the college had a good academic reputation,” her father said, visibly distraught.
The state health department has also sought a detailed report from the college authorities regarding the incident, a senior official confirmed.
NCW Team Heads to Durgapur
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the case and dispatched a team to Durgapur to meet the survivor and her family.
“Crime against women is on the rise in Bengal. The police are not taking proactive steps in such cases. This is quite unfortunate,” NCW member Archana Majumdar said.
“I will request the chief minister to take concrete action to curb such incidents,” she added, referring to the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government.
