The sequel to the 2021 hit Mortal Kombat is set to release worldwide on October 24, featuring new characters, returning cast members, and intense battles that promise to elevate the franchise.
Washington DC [US], July 19: Warner Bros. has officially unveiled the highly anticipated first trailer for Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the blockbuster 2021 film adaptation of the iconic fighting video game series. The new film introduces fresh faces to the cast, including The Boys star Karl Urban, who steps into the shoes of the legendary Johnny Cage. The film is scheduled for a global theatrical release on October 24.
The original Mortal Kombat movie successfully introduced audiences to the game’s popular fighters, and the upcoming sequel promises an even bigger roster. The trailer showcases several new and fan-favorite characters, intensifying the excitement among gaming and movie enthusiasts.
Karl Urban joins the ensemble cast as Johnny Cage, a brash Hollywood actor and martial arts fighter who stands out as one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. In addition to Urban, Mortal Kombat 2 will feature Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, the deadly princess wielding steel fans; You star Tati Gabrielle as Jade; Damon Herriman as the dark wizard Quan Chi; bodybuilder Martyn Ford as the fearsome Shao Kahn; Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel; Desmond Chiam as Kitana’s father King Jerrod; and CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, the menacing warrior with retractable claws, according to Variety.
As depicted in the trailer, Johnny Cage is recruited by a Kung Fu master to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Initially reluctant, Cage is horrified by the brutal life-and-death battles but eventually steps up, performing high-energy stunts and intense combat sequences in an effort to save his world.
The film is directed by Simon McQuoid, with the screenplay penned by Jeremy Slater, based on the legendary video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The project is produced by Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and Simon McQuoid, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Jeremy Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff serving as executive producers.
Returning cast members from the 2021 film include Lewis Tan as the original character Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as the tough military officer Sonya Blade; Ludi Lin as fireball-wielding karate master Liu Kang; Mehcad Brooks as the cyber-enhanced Jax; Josh Lawson as the ruthless mercenary Kano; and Chin Han as the sinister sorcerer Shang Tsung.
Additionally, Shogun actor Tadanobu Asano reprises his role as the thunder god Raiden, while Hiroyuki Sanada returns as the fiery warrior Scorpion. Joe Taslim is back as the ice-cold Sub-Zero, and Max Huang will once again portray Kung Lao with his deadly razor-edged hat.
