Waqf Amendment Bill Report Postponed Again; Other Bills And Protests In Parliament

New Delhi [India]: The report of the Joint Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which was expected to be presented in the Lok Sabha today, has been postponed once again.

As per the list of business, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to introduce a bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday that aims to establish the Institute of Rural Management Anand as a university. The proposed university will be known as “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University, and the bill also seeks to declare it an institution of national importance to provide technical and management education and training in the cooperative sector.

The bill is intended to promote cooperative research and development, aiming to achieve global excellence and realize the vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi.” The goal is to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country by creating a network of institutions dedicated to this purpose.

Additionally, the Lok Sabha Secretary General will lay on the table two bills that were passed by Parliament during the Third Session of the Eighteenth Lok Sabha and received Presidential assent.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad is set to present the fourth report of the Committee on External Affairs concerning the Demands for Grants of the Ministry of External Affairs for the year 2024-25. BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy will also lay the reports of the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture, specifically on the action taken by the government in response to the committee’s 351st report on the functioning of National Academies and other cultural institutions.

In other developments, MP Chandrasekhar Azad held a protest today in front of Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s statue at Prerna Sthal in Parliament, demanding justice for a Dalit woman allegedly gang-raped and murdered in Ayodhya. Azad also submitted an adjournment motion in Parliament to discuss the matter, which has been raised by Congress and SP leaders who are calling for a debate on the issue.

In the Rajya Sabha, Congress MP Randeep Surjewala has given notice to discuss ongoing incidents of disrespect toward Babasaheb Ambedkar.

The ongoing budget session of Parliament began on January 31 and is scheduled to continue until April 4.
