Patna (Bihar) [India], April 5: Amid rising political heat over the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, Union Minister Chirag Paswan came out strongly in defence of the NDA government, accusing the opposition of “misleading” people and setting “false narratives” against reforms aimed at inclusivity.
“Whenever the NDA government has brought any law, bill or amendment which has helped weaker sections to join the mainstream, the opposition has always misled people about it,” Paswan told reporters on Saturday.
🏛️ Opposition’s Pattern of Misguidance, Says Paswan
Drawing parallels with past legislation, Paswan cited examples including:
- The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)
- The abrogation of Article 370
- The construction of the Shri Ram Temple
“They did the same thing with CAA, Article 370, and Ram Mandir. Now they’re spreading misinformation about the Waqf Amendment Bill, falsely portraying it as anti-Muslim,” he added.
⚖️ Bill Faces Legal Challenge
Despite its passage in both houses — 288 votes in Lok Sabha and 128 in Rajya Sabha — the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 has triggered backlash:
- Congress, AIMIM, and RJD have vocally opposed the bill.
- Several JD(U) leaders have resigned in protest of the party’s support.
- AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi has already filed a petition in the Supreme Court, calling the bill “unconstitutional.”
📜 What Does the Bill Do?
The bill seeks to amend the Waqf Act of 1995, aiming to:
- Improve administration of Waqf properties
- Enhance registration processes
- Increase the use of technology for transparency and record management
It was reintroduced with changes based on the recommendations of a Joint Parliamentary Committee, and the government claims it will bring better governance and transparency in the management of Waqf properties.
🗳️ Political Impact
With Lok Sabha elections 2024 looming in the rearview and community tensions rising, the bill has become yet another flashpoint in the NDA vs INDIA alliance narrative war. Whether the courts uphold or strike down its provisions, the political battle over it is likely to continue heating up in the days ahead.
