VP JD Vance Meets PM Modi, Hails Him As “Great Leader”; India, US Launch New Strategic Initiative COMPACT

New Delhi [India]: United States Vice President JD Vance called it an “honour” to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the first day of his India visit, calling the Indian leader a “great leader” and appreciating the warm welcome extended to his family.

“It was an honor to see Prime Minister Modi this evening. He’s a great leader, and he was incredibly kind to my family,” Vance wrote in response to a post from PM Modi on X (formerly Twitter).

Expressing a forward-looking approach to the India-US partnership, Vance added:

“I look forward to working under President Trump’s leadership to strengthen our friendship and cooperation with the people of India!”

Earlier, PM Modi welcomed the US Vice President and his family at his official residence and reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations towards deepening cooperation across sectors.

“Pleased to welcome US Vice President JD Vance and his family to New Delhi. We reviewed the fast-paced progress following my visit to the US and meeting with President Trump. We are committed to mutually beneficial cooperation, including in trade, technology, defence, energy and people-to-people exchanges,” PM Modi shared on X.

He also underscored that the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership will be one of the defining partnerships of the 21st Century, shaping the future for both nations and beyond.

Launch of COMPACT Initiative

During their meeting, PM Modi and Vice President Vance jointly launched a landmark initiative—India-US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology)—aimed at strengthening bilateral engagement.

According to a statement from the US Vice President’s office, the COMPACT initiative is “anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill, and robust engagement of their citizens.”

Progress on Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA)

The leaders also announced finalisation of the Terms of Reference for negotiations on a US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

“Vice President Vance and Prime Minister Modi welcomed significant progress in the negotiations for a US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and formally announced the finalization of the Terms of Reference for the negotiations, laying down a roadmap for further discussions about our shared economic priorities,” the statement noted.

The BTA aims to modernize trade dynamics by promoting job creation, economic growth, and supply chain integration in a balanced and mutually beneficial manner.

“Guided by their respective visions of ‘Amrit Kaal for India’ and ‘Golden Age for America,’ BTA is expected to create new opportunities of growth for workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in both countries,” the statement added.

India Visit Itinerary

Vice President Vance arrived in Jaipur on Monday evening with his family for the second leg of his four-day visit. He will head to Agra on April 23, with the trip concluding in the early hours of April 24.

This significant visit follows a highly successful meeting between President Donald Trump and PM Modi in Washington earlier this year.
