Virat Kohli Surpasses Ricky Ponting’s Record For Most Catches In ODIs, Becomes Second-Highest Catch Taker

Dubai [UAE]: Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has added yet another milestone to his illustrious career by surpassing Australian legend Ricky Ponting’s record for the most catches taken by a fielder in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Kohli achieved this feat during the high-stakes Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia in Dubai on Wednesday.

Kohli’s Record-Breaking Performance

The 36-year-old showcased remarkable athleticism, successfully completing two catches as Australia was bowled out for a modest 264 runs. With this performance, Kohli now holds the record for the second-highest catches taken by a fielder in ODIs, amassing 161 catches in 301 matches. The record for the most catches by a fielder is still held by former Sri Lankan batting maestro Mahela Jayawardene with 218 catches.

Ricky Ponting, who previously held the second spot with 160 catches, has now moved to third place, followed by former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin with 156 catches.

Key Moments: How Kohli Broke the Record

  • Kohli equaled Ponting’s record when he caught Josh Inglis, who holed out straight to him.
  • He set the new record with a comfortable catch on the final delivery of the 49th over. Nathan Ellis, attempting a big hit, sent the ball over long-on without proper timing. Kohli moved a couple of steps to his right to complete the catch effortlessly.

Match Summary: India vs Australia

Australia’s batting effort was powered by blistering fifties from Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey (61). However, Mohammed Shami led India’s bowling attack with figures of 3/48, effectively restricting Australia’s score.

  • Varun Chakravarthy (2/49) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/40) were also instrumental, weaving a spin web around the Australian batters.
  • Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya contributed with a wicket each.
  • A brilliant throw by Shreyas Iyer ran out Alex Carey, ending his counter-attacking innings.

Virat Kohli’s Legacy in ODIs

Kohli’s latest achievement adds to his legacy as one of the most complete players in cricket history, not only with the bat but also as a reliable fielder. His fitness, agility, and sharp reflexes have played a significant role in India’s success over the years.

Records to Watch: The Chase for Jayawardene

With 161 catches to his name, Kohli is now 57 catches short of Mahela Jayawardene’s record of 218 catches. Given his current form and fitness, it will be interesting to see if Kohli can dethrone Jayawardene in the coming years.
