The eagerly awaited release of Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has officially been postponed, just two days before it was scheduled to hit theatres. The confirmation came on January 7 from the film’s distributors in Europe and Malaysia, disappointing millions of fans who were gearing up for the grand premiere.
Distributors Confirm Delay
The overseas distributors took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a detailed statement announcing the postponement. The note read:

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, the initial release of Jana Nayagan, scheduled for January 9, 2026, has been postponed to a later date. We are currently awaiting further updates from the production team. Once the new release date is confirmed, official announcements will be shared through our authorized platforms.”
They further appealed to fans to remain calm and avoid believing rumours circulating online.
“In the meantime, we sincerely request all fans and supporters to remain patient and positive. Kindly refrain from spreading or engaging with unverified or misleading information from unofficial sources. Several arrangements are still in progress, and we humbly seek your understanding and cooperation. Let us stay united and approach this situation calmly and responsibly as we await a positive resolution. Thank you for your continued support,” the statement added.
Censor Trouble Reaches Court
The postponement follows a heated legal battle involving the film’s certification. Earlier, the Madras High Court reserved its verdict till January 9, the original release date, after the makers approached the court for clarity on the censor process. The court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to have the film reviewed by a fresh committee.

This controversy has had a wider impact. Since CBFC approval of the Tamil version is essential before any dubbed versions can be cleared, the delay has now affected the release of Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions as well.
The film’s team had approached the court after failing to secure certification despite submitting the film over a month earlier. Reports also suggest that on December 19, the censor board had already recommended certain cuts and muted dialogues.
About Jana Nayagan
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan boasts a powerful star cast, including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The film carries massive emotional and political significance, as it is widely believed to be Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before his full-fledged political journey begins.
Fans now anxiously await an official update on the new release date, hoping for a positive resolution soon.
