New Delhi [India]: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has initiated a high-level investigation into allegations of luxurious items found at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence, located at 6, Flag Staff Road. The inquiry follows a request made by Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta in a letter dated November 20, 2024.
Allegations by Vijender Gupta
In his letter, Gupta alleged discrepancies in the inventory of items provided by the Public Works Department (PWD) in 2022, when Kejriwal assumed his second term, and the luxurious items discovered after he vacated the bungalow in 2024.
Items in Question:
- High-end toilet seats
- Expensive wash basins
- Reclining sofas
- Costly curtains and premium carpets
- Large TVs and refrigerators
Gupta claimed these items were not supplied by the PWD, as confirmed by official documents from 2022, raising questions about their source and funding.
Corruption Allegations
Gupta linked the luxurious additions to alleged corruption, suggesting that individuals benefiting from Kejriwal’s controversial liquor policy funded the amenities.
- He accused the former Chief Minister of using “ill-gotten wealth” to furnish the residence lavishly.
- Referred to BJP’s prior claims of “Rs 12-lakh toilet commodes” as part of a larger corruption scheme involving crores of rupees.
Official Response
- On December 6, the Lieutenant Governor instructed the Vigilance Department to investigate the matter.
- The Vigilance Department directed the Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD) to conduct a detailed probe.
Call for Accountability
Vijender Gupta demanded a thorough investigation to determine:
- Who supplied the expensive items?
- What benefits they received in return?
Gupta emphasized the need for transparency, alleging that Kejriwal’s tenure was marked by financial misconduct benefiting select individuals and organizations.
This investigation comes amid heightened political tensions and ongoing scrutiny of the former Chief Minister’s policies and governance practices.
