Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 15: Vicky Kaushal’s historical drama Chhaava, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has made a remarkable start at the Indian box office. The film, which marks a significant milestone in Kaushal’s career, grossed Rs 33.10 crores on its opening day.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh praised the film’s performance, calling it Vicky Kaushal’s “first double-digit opener” and his “biggest opener ever.” Adarsh compared the opening numbers to Kaushal’s previous films, noting that Chhaava significantly outperformed his past box office entries, including Uri: The Surgical Strike and Bad Newz.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava portrays the heroic story of the Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, showcasing his coronation in 1681 and the challenges he faced. Vicky Kaushal’s performance as the historical figure has garnered praise, with the actor describing the role as his “toughest yet.” The preparation for the role involved immense physical and mental discipline, which Kaushal explained required a commitment of one and a half to two years.
“I’m just happy that I get to say that this is the toughest role I’ve played till date. I hope I can continue to grow, not just as an actor but as a human being, with every role I take on,” Kaushal shared in a recent interview with ANI.
The film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandana. However, it has faced some controversy, particularly surrounding a dance sequence in which the character of Sambhaji Maharaj performed the Lezim, a traditional Maharashtrian dance. The sequence was removed following objections from political figures, including Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant.
Despite the controversies, the film’s box office success reflects both the popularity of the story and Kaushal’s dedication to his craft. The film continues to be a topic of conversation, and Kaushal’s portrayal of the Maratha ruler is likely to remain a key talking point in the coming weeks.
