Vicky Kaushal On His Toughest Role Yet In ‘Chhaava’: A Transformation For The Ages

New Delhi (India), February 12: Actor Vicky Kaushal is set to release his much-awaited film ‘Chhaava’, where he takes on the monumental role of the legendary Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Known for his dedication to each character, Kaushal admits that playing such a historical figure is his “toughest role” to date.

In preparation for the demanding role, Vicky had to undergo significant physical and mental preparation. Not only did he work extensively on his appearance, gaining 25 kg to look the part, but he also immersed himself in the rich culture, history, and language of the time to truly embody the Maratha ruler. Kaushal remarked that playing such an iconic figure required discipline, noting that his commitment wasn’t just for a month, but extended over one and a half to two years.

“It was demanding on every front,” Vicky shared. Besides the intense physical transformation, he underwent rigorous training in horse riding and sword fighting to authentically portray the warrior king. His commitment went beyond physicality—he worked closely with director Laxman Utekar, meeting him daily for extensive discussions to understand the nuances of the era and the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

The collaborative process involved not just reading historical books but delving deeper into the culture and philosophy of the time. “Instead of just reading the books, I decided to sit with Laxman sir every day. He would feed me information, not just from the novel, but from the entire era, culture, and what life must have been like for these figures,” Vicky explained.

Despite the intense work schedule and long filming days, the character of Sambhaji Maharaj often stayed with Kaushal, affecting his mindset even after leaving the set. He admitted, “You become silent, stay more focused, and that stays with you for that time.” The emotional toll of such a role, combined with the physical exhaustion, made it a challenging experience for the actor.

Throughout this process, Vicky Kaushal credits his wife, actress Katrina Kaif, for her unwavering support. He recalled how Katrina understood the emotional and mental space he needed during such an intense role, respecting his need for solitude and focus. “She knew how a person needs a certain space while shooting for a role like Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj,” he revealed.

In a lighthearted moment, Vicky joked that Katrina missed his previous physical transformation once he shed the weight and shaved his beard for the film. “She would send me those reels on social media and ask, ‘Where is this Vicky?’” he laughed, referring to the muscular look and long beard he sported for the role.

Looking ahead, Vicky teased his next project, ‘Mahavatar’, in which he will portray Chiranjeevi Parashurama. This role will require another transformation, with fans anticipating his return to the iconic look from ‘Chhaava’.

‘Chhaava’, set to release on February 14, 2025, is a historical epic about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film traces Sambhaji Maharaj’s journey, starting with his coronation in 1681. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film also stars Akshaye Khanna and Rashmika Mandana. Despite some controversy, including the removal of a Lezim dance sequence following objections from political figures like Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant, Vicky is proud of his work.

He concluded, “I’m just happy that I get to say that this is the toughest role I’ve played till date. I hope I can continue to grow, not just as an actor but as a human being, with every role I take on.”
