Uttarkashi Flood Survivors Protest Against Rs 5000 Relief Cheques, Call It ‘Insult’ to Their Suffering

August 10, 2025: The flash floods in Uttarkashi caused a lot of damage, and now the villagers are even more frustrated with the initial relief attempts. Many people have turned down the ₹5,000 checks the government offered as “immediate relief” after losing their homes, businesses, and even family members. They say the amount is a deep “insult to their suffering.”

A villager spoke for the whole town when they said, “We have lost everything: our families, homes, and businesses worth crores,” according to a report by The Times of India. This amount is an insult. The sluggish response for fundamental needs has made this frustration worse. People in the area said they didn’t have power and didn’t get candles until four days after the accident, which meant they had to spend evenings in the dark. They further say that many of the households affected have not yet received the meals that the government promised them.

The protests have grown stronger since they are very different from the earlier pledge of a considerably larger quantity of aid. Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister, has already said that those whose homes were completely destroyed will get ₹5 lakh in compensation, as would the families of anyone who died.

Rescue and rehabilitation work is going on right now

Despite the outcry from the locals, Chief Minister Dhami has given an update on the larger rescue effort. He told that more than 1,000 persons, including devotees and pilgrims, have been saved. He also said that Harsil’s connectivity has been restored and that a Bailey bridge is being built at Lachi Gad to help rebuild the roadways to the area.

CM Dhami has also answered questions about long-term support. He has said that all families that are affected will get food for the next six months. A three-member commission led by the Revenue Secretary is also being set up to find out how bad the damage is and help the families who were affected get back on their feet. A preliminary report is due within a week.
