Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Slams Sonia Gandhi Over ‘Poor Thing’ Remark On President Murmu

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday strongly condemned Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi over her “poor thing” remark about President Droupadi Murmu, calling it an attack on tribal pride.

In a sharp response on X (formerly Twitter), CM Dhami said:

“The words used by Sonia Gandhi for the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, are extremely reprehensible. Using such language for the Honorable President, who holds the highest post in the country, is an attack on tribal pride. Once again, Congress has shown its divisive mentality and its anti-tribal, anti-Dalit, and anti-poor mindset.”

Widespread Criticism from Political Leaders

BJP Leaders Condemn Sonia Gandhi’s Remarks

Union Minister Anupriya Patel also denounced Sonia Gandhi’s statement, calling it inappropriate and disrespectful.

“Sonia Gandhi is a very senior leader and a former Congress President. Using words like ‘poor thing’ for the President is extremely condemnable. Such remarks do not suit a senior MP and leader. I strongly condemn it.”

Chhattisgarh BJP Chief Kiran Singh Deo criticized the Congress leader, stating:

“There should be political decorum when commenting on dignitaries, especially the First Citizen of the country. It seems Congress leaders only want media attention by making such statements.”

JD(U) Calls for Apology from Sonia Gandhi

Surprisingly, BJP ally Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] also joined the criticism. JD(U) leader KC Tyagi called the remark “unfortunate and condemnable” and demanded an apology from Sonia Gandhi.

“The statement made by Sonia Gandhi about Honorable President Droupadi Murmu is very unfortunate. She is the first tribal woman President of India, and such an unparliamentary remark is unacceptable. We demand that Sonia Gandhi take back her words and apologize to the President.”

The Controversy: What Did Sonia Gandhi Say?

The controversy erupted when Sonia Gandhi commented on President Murmu’s address to the joint session of Parliament, saying:

“The President was getting very tired by the end… She could hardly speak, poor thing.”

Her remarks were quickly met with backlash from BJP leaders, who accused the Congress leader of insulting India’s first tribal woman President.

Congress Faces Political Backlash

With elections approaching, the political storm over Sonia Gandhi’s comment has intensified. The BJP and its allies are using the controversy to accuse Congress of disrespecting tribal and marginalized communities.

Congress has not yet officially responded to the backlash, but this controversy is likely to escalate in the coming days.
