New York: This week, while world leaders met at the United Nations, the United States announced a 21-point plan for peace in the Middle East. The proposal is meant to end the almost two-year-long war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump said he was hopeful that a settlement was close.
It seems like we have a deal for Gaza. Trump told reporters before leaving the White House to go to the Ryder Cup golf competition in New York, “I think it’s a deal that gets the hostages back. It’s going to be a deal that ends the war.”
The president, on the other hand, did not give any more information.
Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy, said that the plan was sent out on Tuesday to officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
Trump, a strong and vocal supporter of Israel around the world, said he talked with leaders from numerous Middle Eastern countries and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday.
The White House believes that the strategy will lead to both a truce and the release of prisoners. This could be the most important diplomatic step toward ending the war.
