United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed heartfelt condolences on the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, recognizing his pivotal role in strengthening US-India relations and advancing economic reforms.
A Key Advocate for US-India Strategic Partnership
In his statement, Blinken highlighted Dr. Singh’s efforts in fostering the US-India partnership, including his instrumental role in the landmark US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.
“Dr. Singh was one of the greatest champions of the US-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together in the past two decades. His leadership in advancing the US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signified a major investment in the potential of the US-India relationship,” said Blinken.
He further acknowledged Singh’s legacy as a leader whose economic reforms spurred India’s rapid growth.
“The United States offers our sincere condolences to the people of India for the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. At home, Dr. Singh will be remembered for his economic reforms that spurred India’s rapid economic growth. We mourn Dr. Singh’s passing and will always remember his dedication to bringing the United States and India closer together,” Blinken added.

Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on the evening of December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. AIIMS Delhi confirmed his death due to age-related medical conditions. He suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home and was rushed to the hospital, but resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful.
Dr. Singh’s Storied Career
Born in Punjab in 1932, Dr. Singh served two terms as Prime Minister of India (2004–2014), earning a reputation as a visionary economist and a statesman of humility and integrity. His tenure was marked by significant economic and foreign policy advancements, including the historic civil nuclear deal with the US.
Retiring from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after 33 years of service, Dr. Singh’s contributions continue to shape India’s economic and political landscape. His passing has been mourned globally, with tributes underscoring his transformative impact on India and the world.
