New Delhi [India], January 16: US President Joe Biden on Thursday stated that the United States has pulled ahead in its competition with China, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI).
During his final address from the Oval Office, Biden emphasized the importance of the US leading AI development and ensuring it remains safe for humanity. “We’ve pulled ahead in our competition with China, and so much more. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished for the American people, and I wish the incoming administration success,” he said.
Biden expressed his concern regarding AI’s potential risks, stating, “Nothing offers more profound possibilities and risks for our economy, our security, society, and humanity. AI could even help us end cancer, but without safeguards, it could present threats to our rights, privacy, and way of life. We must make sure AI is safe and trustworthy for all humankind.”
He also reiterated the need for the US to lead in AI development, as the country is, according to Biden, “the Land of Liberty.” He added, “In the age of AI, it’s crucial that the people govern, and as America, not China, we must lead the world in this field.”
Biden further called for tax code reform, focusing on fairness and making the wealthy pay their fair share rather than giving substantial tax cuts to billionaires. “We need to reform the tax code to ensure the wealthiest start paying their fair share,” Biden emphasized.
In his address, Biden outlined other proposed reforms, including the need to eliminate ‘dark money’ from politics, impose term limits on the Supreme Court, and introduce measures to prevent members of Congress from trading stocks during their tenure. He also called for constitutional amendments to clarify that no president is immune from criminal actions while in office, asserting that presidential power is not absolute.
Biden concluded by stressing the dangers of concentrated wealth and power, stating, “In a democracy, the concentration of wealth and power erodes unity and common purpose. It leads to distrust and division. We need an even playing field where everyone has a fair shot, not a guarantee, but a fair shot.”
