US Military Plane Deporting Migrants To India, Marking A New Phase In Deportation Efforts Under Trump Administration

A US military plane has been used to deport migrants to India, marking the furthest destination for such deportation flights under the Trump administration, Reuters reported, citing a US official. This is part of an expanded effort to address illegal immigration and enforce stricter border policies.

The Pentagon has started providing flights for the deportation of over 5,000 immigrants currently held in US facilities in El Paso, Texas and San Diego, California. Previously, military aircraft have been used to fly migrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras, but the inclusion of India signifies a significant expansion of these efforts.

Military flights, however, come at a high cost. According to Reuters, a military deportation flight to Guatemala last week likely cost at least USD 4,675 per migrant, raising concerns over the financial impact of such operations.

On January 24, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed its commitment to facilitating the return of Indian nationals who are overstaying or living in the United States without proper documentation. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “We are against illegal immigration, especially because it is linked to several forms of organized crime.” He further added, “If Indian nationals are overstaying or residing without documentation, we will take them back, provided documents are shared with us so that we can verify their nationality and that they are indeed Indians.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted on January 24 that the Trump administration was carrying out “the largest massive deportation operation in history.” She shared the statement on X, saying, “The Trump Administration also deported hundreds of illegal immigrant criminals via military aircraft. The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept.”

Leavitt also mentioned that 538 illegal immigrant criminals, including a suspected terrorist, members of the Tren de Aragua gang, and individuals convicted of sex crimes against minors, had been arrested. She emphasized the administration’s commitment to sending a “strong and clear message” that illegal immigration will result in severe consequences.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump had promised to declare a national emergency for mass deportations of migrants in the US without legal permission. Upon taking office on January 20, Trump signed executive orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border with Mexico, a move that has set the stage for intensified deportation operations.
