US Mediates Ceasefire And Hostage Deal Between Israel And Hamas

US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday the successful negotiation of a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, ending over 15 months of conflict. The comprehensive deal unfolds in three distinct phases, including a full ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of hostages, including Americans.

Biden emphasized the intensive diplomatic efforts involved, acknowledging the support of Israel, the US, and a coalition of 20 nations that opposed Houthi-led attacks.

Key Highlights of the Ceasefire Agreement:

  1. Phase 1 (6 weeks):
    • A complete ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza’s populated areas.
    • Release of hostages held by Hamas, including Americans, women, elderly individuals, and the injured.
    • Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
    • Palestinians in Gaza will return to their homes.
  2. Phase 2:
    • Negotiations for a permanent end to the war.
    • Ceasefire to continue during negotiations.
    • Release of remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, with Israeli forces withdrawing entirely from Gaza.
  3. Phase 3:
    • Return of remains of deceased hostages.
    • Implementation of a major reconstruction plan for Gaza.

President Biden remarked, “This is one of the toughest negotiations I have ever experienced,” attributing the breakthrough to the combined pressure on Hamas and strategic American diplomacy.

The agreement includes Hamas releasing 33 Israeli hostages, captured during the October 7, 2023, attacks, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Casualties of the Conflict:
Since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023:

  • In Gaza: Over 46,707 Palestinians killed, 110,265 wounded (as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry).
  • In Israel: 1,139 killed during Hamas-led attacks; over 200 initially taken hostage.

The deal also reflects broader US diplomatic efforts, including building coalitions against regional threats and fostering economic cooperation across the Middle East and beyond.
