Honolulu: An American content creator has gone viral after exposing hidden resort fees during her honeymoon stay at a hotel in Hawaii. Posting under the handle @funkshe, she revealed how she was charged over $500 for services she neither requested nor used.
In her video, she said:
“Travel in the US is dead and it’s all because of corporate greed. On my honeymoon, my last stop is Honolulu. I stayed at a resort and saw a $500 charge added to my bill at checkout. It says there is a daily resort fee of $52 plus tax per room per day.”
What the Fees Covered
The resort fee included amenities such as:
Flower and coconut greeting
Daily yoga sessions for two
Freshly baked banana bread muffins
Refillable logo water bottles
Cultural activities
High-speed internet for Marriott Bonvoy members
However, she pointed out that basic facilities like beach chairs and pool seating were excluded. “There is actually a $200 fee to reserve a pool chair in the sun,” she noted, criticizing the extra costs as unnecessary.
Social Media Reactions
The viral clip sparked debate online. Many agreed with her frustration:
One user wrote: “Corporate greed hidden fees is something we should absolutely address… Hawaiians have been warning us to boycott Hawaii because of capitalism destroying the island.”
Another added: “Save money for flights to Europe or Asia — the experience is 1000x better for the same price.”
A third commented: “That’s why you don’t travel in the US… these cities pass expenses onto tourists and charge for everything.”
The controversy has reignited criticism over resort fees in US hotels, which many travelers argue lack transparency and exploit guests.
