US Embassy Warns Against Visa Abuse Amid Crackdown; Indian Student Handcuffed At Newark Sparks Outrage

New Delhi/New York: The US Embassy in India on Tuesday issued a stern warning to Indian travelers, stressing that the United States will not tolerate visa misuse or illegal entry. In its public message, the embassy reiterated that while legitimate travelers are welcome, entering the US is not a guaranteed right.

“We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of US law,” the statement said.

Viral Video: Indian Student Handcuffed

The warning comes amid a viral video showing an Indian student being handcuffed by authorities at Newark Liberty International Airport, which sparked massive outrage on social media. The video, posted by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, shows the student crying and being treated “like a criminal.”

According to Jain, the student was allegedly denied entry and deported back to India.

Responding to the incident, the Indian Consulate General in New York stated:

“We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard.”

Tighter Immigration Under Trump

The incident and the embassy’s statement come amid renewed immigration crackdowns under former US President Donald Trump, who has implemented stricter visa norms and mass deportations. His administration recently banned travelers from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Yemen, from entering the US or obtaining visas.

In addition, US authorities have intensified scrutiny of foreign students, especially after the pro-Palestinian protests rocked American universities in 2024. Several international students have reportedly been detained, interrogated, or deported for alleged visa violations.

What This Means for Indian Travelers

Indian nationals, especially students and professionals, are advised to strictly comply with US visa rules, including:

  • Avoid overstaying visas
  • Enter only for the purpose granted (student, visitor, work, etc.)
  • Ensure all documentation is accurate and truthful
  • Cooperate with immigration officers at ports of entry

Legal experts warn that even minor violations may lead to deportation, bans, or visa denials in the future.
