Washington DC [US], December 8: The United States Department of Defense (DoD) has announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine, amounting to USD 988 million under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
This latest aid aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities in the ongoing conflict with Russia by providing essential munitions, unmanned aerial systems, and support for maintenance and repair programs.
In an official statement, the Pentagon outlined that the assistance package includes ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), and various equipment, components, and spare parts to maintain and repair artillery systems, tanks, and armored vehicles.
“This significant package ensures Ukraine has the tools necessary to combat Russian aggression effectively. The $988 million commitment through USAI will supply munitions and advanced systems critical for sustaining Ukraine’s combat power,” the statement read.
The DoD also emphasized its collaborative efforts with nearly 50 allies and partners through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group to ensure Ukraine’s success in the ongoing war. This marks the Biden administration’s 22nd package under USAI, showcasing continued U.S. support.
The announcement follows a recent statement from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which marked 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion. The MFA expressed gratitude for international support while urging allies to contribute to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Victory Plan aimed at achieving a sustainable peace.
“We urge our partners to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, protect critical energy facilities, and respond decisively to Kremlin actions threatening our nuclear energy security,” the MFA declared. “Restoring global stability requires the full restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The U.S. assistance underscores a steadfast commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s resilience and defense capabilities, paving the way for a just and enduring peace in the region.
