UP Rudras Secure 3-1 Victory Over Delhi SG Pipers in Hockey India League

Goals by Wortelboer, Russell, and Cosyns propel Rudras to No. 2 on the points table.

Rourkela (Odisha), January 12: UP Rudras showcased their dominance on Saturday by defeating Delhi SG Pipers 3-1 in an exciting encounter at the ongoing Men’s Hockey India League. Goals from Floris Wortelboer (30′), Kane Russell (43′), and Tanguy Cosyns (54′) ensured the Rudras earned three crucial points and climbed to the second spot in the points table.

Delhi SG Pipers’ captain Jake Whetton (29′) was the lone goalscorer for his team, which remains winless in the league so far.

A Game of Missed Opportunities and Defensive Brilliance

UP Rudras started strongly, demonstrating superior ball possession and aggressive circle entries in the opening quarter. However, their first penalty corner (PC) attempt, a variation between Kane Russell and Sam Ward, failed to convert. Despite several promising attacks, the quarter ended goalless.

The second quarter saw the Rudras miss another PC opportunity early on. Lalit Upadhyay failed to capitalise on a rebound, sending his shot wide. While the Rudras’ attack showed promise, their defence faltered in the 29th minute when Jake Whetton dribbled past defenders and scored for Delhi SG Pipers.

However, their celebrations were short-lived as Floris Wortelboer equalised in the very next minute with a decisive strike, ensuring the first half ended 1-1.

Rudras Take Control

The Rudras gained the lead in the 43rd minute with a powerful PC flick by Kane Russell, bringing the score to 2-1. In the final quarter, Delhi SG Pipers pushed hard for an equaliser, with Manjeet attempting a brave shot and the team earning a PC. However, they failed to convert these chances.

UP Rudras secured a crucial cushion in the 54th minute when Tanguy Cosyns executed a precise PC to extend their lead to 3-1.

Defensive Strength Secures Victory

Despite Delhi SG Pipers earning another PC in the final minutes, UP Rudras held firm in defence, ensuring their third outright win in five matches. This victory propelled them to second place on the points table, just behind Tamil Nadu Dragons.

Points Table Update

UP Rudras have emerged as strong contenders in the league, with their consistent performance putting them in a promising position as the tournament progresses.
