Guterres Calls for Dialogue Amidst Rising Casualties and Diplomatic Push by US President Trump
New York, USA—July 27, 2025— The mounting violence along the Cambodia-Thailand border is making people throughout the world more and more worried. Today, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, officially expressed his “deep concern” and made an urgent call for both countries to agree to an immediate ceasefire and work out their long-standing problems via peaceful conversation.
The UN Chief said in a direct message on X that he was still willing to help find a peaceful settlement. “I am quite worried about the recent fighting along the border between Cambodia and Thailand. I ask both sides to stop fighting right away and talk about their problems instead. Guterres said, “I am still available to help with efforts to find a peaceful solution to the dispute,” stressing how urgent the situation is.
A Dispute That Has Been Going On for 100 Years
CNN says that the boundary issue between Bangkok and Phnom Penh isn’t new; it’s been going on for more than a century, since France drew the line between the two cities during the colonial period.
The new escalation, which started on Thursday, has already caused a lot of damage. Officials say that at than a dozen people have died, many more have been hurt, and an unbelievable 150,000 residents have had to leave their homes. This new antagonism has set Thailand, a long-time friend of the US, against Cambodia’s newer armed forces, which are associated with China.
Trump’s efforts at diplomacy
The UN Chief’s plea for a cease-fire comes right after US President Donald Trump’s big push for diplomacy. Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he had a “very good call” with the Prime Minister of Cambodia. He also told him about his talks with Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister.
Trump said, “Both sides want an immediate ceasefire and peace,” showing that he was hopeful about the situation. He said that these conversations about peace were closely connected to the talks about trade that were still going on with the United States. “They have agreed to meet right away and quickly work out a ceasefire and, in the end, peace!” It was an honor to work with both countries. Their history and culture are long and rich. They should be able to get along for a long time. When all is done and Peace is at hand, I can’t wait to finish our Trading Agreements with each of you! Trump’s article went on to say that there might be a correlation between peace and working together on the economy.
Thailand’s Reaction and Request for Honesty
Phumtham Wechayacha, Thailand’s acting prime minister, liked Trump’s plan. Wechayacha thanked the US President for caring about the war in a Facebook post. “A little while ago, I talked to President Trump, who asked that Thailand and Cambodia stop fighting right away. “Wechayacha said, “I thanked President Trump for his concern and said that Thailand agreed in principle to a ceasefire.”
Wechayacha also underlined how important it is for Cambodia to have “sincere intention.” He asked Trump to tell Thailand that they wanted to start a bilateral dialogue “as soon as possible” to set up clear rules and steps for the ceasefire and a long-term peaceful end to the conflict.
In the next several days, diplomatic efforts will be very important in bringing an end to the rising violence and making sure that the two Southeast Asian neighbors may live in peace for a long time.
