UN Chief Guterres Calls for Complete Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanese Territory by January 27

Guterres visits Lebanon’s Naqoura and reaffirms UN’s support for Lebanon amidst ongoing territorial disputes

Beirut [Lebanon], January 19: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Israel to fully withdraw from Lebanese territory by January 27, urging compliance with international agreements.

Guterres made this statement during his visit to Naqoura, a Lebanese border town that hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The UN facility was recently vacated by Israeli forces as part of ongoing negotiations.

Guterres Meets Lebanese Leadership

While in Lebanon, Guterres held discussions with President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister-Designate Nawaf Salam. The leaders discussed Lebanon’s recovery and the need for stability in the region.

Following the meetings, Guterres shared a message on X, stating:
“The road ahead for Lebanon is filled with promise but also great tests. As the Lebanese people travel this road together, the UN is proud to stand with them.”

UN’s Commitment to Lebanon

Guterres emphasized the UN’s dedication to supporting Lebanon through its economic, political, and territorial challenges. The Secretary-General reiterated the importance of dialogue and international cooperation to resolve border tensions peacefully.
