Ukraine Ready To Sign Minerals Agreement With US, Says Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukraine is prepared to sign a minerals agreement with the United States, calling it the “first step toward security guarantees.”

Call for Stronger Commitments

Sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine needs more than just the agreement, stating:

“We are ready to sign the minerals agreement, and it will be the first step toward security guarantees. But it’s not enough, and we need more than just that.”

Zelenskyy cautioned against a ceasefire without security guarantees, stressing:

“A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine. We’ve been fighting for 3 years, and Ukrainian people need to know that America is on our side.”

Diplomatic Meetings Amid Tensions with the US

The announcement follows Zelenskyy’s tense exchange with US President Donald Trump at the White House, after which the Ukrainian leader cut short his visit to Washington on Friday. Despite this, world leaders have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and pledged to enhance assistance.

Meeting with King Charles III

Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy met Britain’s King Charles III at Sandringham House. Expressing gratitude, he wrote on X:

Talks with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni

Zelenskyy also held discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to develop a joint action plan for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Describing the meeting as “productive,” he stated:

“No one other than Putin is interested in the continuation and quick return of the war.”

He underscored the need for unity between Ukraine, Europe, and the US, adding:

“It is important to maintain unity around Ukraine and strengthen our country’s position in cooperation with our allies. Ukraine needs peace backed by robust security guarantees. I am grateful to Italy for its continued support and partnership in bringing peace in Ukraine closer.”

Geopolitical Implications

The US-Ukraine minerals agreement is expected to play a crucial role in securing Ukraine’s strategic resources, particularly in the production of rare earth elements and critical minerals vital for defense and technology sectors. However, Zelenskyy’s insistence on stronger security guarantees highlights Kyiv’s concerns over long-term US support.
