London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced support for the United States’ recent “precision” strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, describing Tehran’s nuclear programme as a “grave threat” to international security. Starmer urged Iran to seek a diplomatic resolution to avoid further escalation.
Taking to social media platform X, Starmer wrote:
“Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security. Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, and the US has taken action to alleviate that threat. The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, and stability in the region is a priority. We call on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.“
The British Prime Minister’s remarks come after US President Donald Trump announced “massive precision” strikes on key Iranian nuclear sites—including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—and warned of further military action if peace was not restored swiftly.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed no rise in off-site radiation levels following the bombings but announced an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the crisis.
“Following attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran—including Fordow—the IAEA can confirm that no increase in off-site radiation levels has been reported as of this time,” the agency noted.
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI) condemned the strikes, calling them violations of international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The statement accused the US and Israel of undermining global nuclear regulations and pledged to continue Iran’s nuclear program regardless of external aggression.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the joint US-Israeli operation, hailing Trump’s decision as historic and essential to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
This development marks a sharp escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict, which began with Israel’s Operation Rising Lion airstrikes on June 13 targeting Iranian military and nuclear assets. Iran responded with ‘Operation True Promise 3’, launching drones and missiles at Israeli energy and military facilities.
With tensions mounting, the international community, including Saudi Arabia and Oman, has called for restraint and diplomatic intervention to prevent further destabilisation in the volatile region.
