UK Government Cuts Post-Study Visa Duration For International Graduates To 18 Months From 2027

The UK government has announced a big change in policy that will affect thousands of international students. The post-study Graduate visa, which lets foreign graduates stay in the nation for up to two years, will only last 18 months starting on January 1, 2027.

The Home Office said that Parliament has passed new laws to change the Graduate visa route. This is meant to make immigration control stricter and make sure that the system “delivers real graduate-level employment outcomes.”

The new guidelines say that students who finish relevant courses will have 18 months, instead of two years, to find a job at the graduate level. But people who finish PhDs or other doctorate programs will still be able to stay for three years after they finish their studies.

Plans for Current Students to Move On

People who apply for the Graduate visa on or before December 31, 2026, will still be able to use it for two years. The new 18-month limit will automatically go into effect after this date.

The Graduate visa will still not be able to be extended, but people who have it can convert to other types of visas, such the Skilled Worker visa, as long as they match the requirements.

Why the Change Was Made

The Home Office said that the change was made because they were worried that many international graduates were not getting jobs at the graduate level as planned.

Officials say that the shorter time frame will help people find jobs more quickly and make the policy more in line with what employers want, while still keeping the UK as a top place to study.

Student visa applicants need to have more money.

The government is also upping the amount of money that anyone who want to get a student visa in the future will need to have. Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, students will need to show that they have more personal funds to show that they can support themselves while they are in school.

Right now, applicants must show:

£1,483 a month for classes in London, or

For up to nine months, courses outside of London cost £1,136 a month.

You have to keep these monies for 28 days in a row, and the last day must be within 31 days after the visa application. They haven’t said yet how much more money is needed.

Costs of education for international students are going up

Because of a new tax on university income from international students, the cost of studying in the UK will go up much more. Students will probably have to pay this extra cost, which might make tuition and living costs go up.

The cost of tuition for undergraduate degrees has already gone up 3.1% for the 2025/26 school year, from £9,250 to £9,535.

All of the changes together make this one of the worst immigration adjustments for overseas students in a long time.

Tougher rules about immigration and speaking English

The UK is also making it harder for anyone who want to study, work, or live in the nation to show that they can speak English well.

This comes after modifications to the rules in January 2024, when most overseas students were not allowed to bring dependents with them, except for those who were in postgraduate research or government-funded programs.

That regulation prompted a drop in the number of international students who enrolled at first, which worried universities that depend on tuition fees from students from other countries.

Signs of recovery even with stricter rules

Even though the rules are harsher, fresh data from the Home Office suggests that more international students are interested in studying in the UK.

In the first half of 2025, the number of student visas issued was 18% more than in the same time period in 2024. Analysts believe the resurgence shows that the UK is still a good place to study since its institutions are known around the world and there are job prospects after graduation, even though visas are now shorter.

Finding a Balance Between Control and Competition

The UK government’s most recent changes to the visa system show how hard it is to find a balance between keeping immigrants out and making the country appealing to talented people from other countries.

Policymakers say that the new visa regulations will improve integrity and employability outcomes, while institutions are worried that the move could turn off potential students and hurt the country’s higher education revenue.

As competition from Canada, Australia, and the U.S. heats up, the UK’s changing immigration rules will be very important in deciding whether it stays a top place for overseas students to study.
