Uber has introduced its iconic Shikara services on Dal Lake, offering a unique blend of Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage and modern digital convenience. This marks Uber’s entry into eco-tourism and heritage transportation in Jammu and Kashmir.
The service allows locals and tourists to book traditional Shikara rides through the Uber app, ensuring easy and affordable access to the picturesque Dal Lake, one of the region’s most prominent attractions. Equipped with safety measures and digital payment options, the Uber Shikara service aims to deliver a hassle-free and memorable experience.
Supporting Local Economy and Sustainability
The initiative supports local Shikara owners by providing a sustainable income source while promoting environmentally friendly travel. This collaboration reflects Uber’s commitment to innovation and community engagement, merging traditional experiences with modern technology.
Positive Reception from Stakeholders
Deeba Khalid, Deputy Director of Tourism Kashmir, welcomed the initiative:
“Dal Lake is iconic, and Shikara rides are a must for tourists visiting Kashmir. This step of bringing Shikaras onto a digital platform offers tourists the convenience of online booking and payments. We hope to see more Shikaras included in this system gradually.”
Wali Mohd Bhat, President of the Shikara Association, emphasized the transparency and convenience brought by the fixed rate of ₹800 per hour:
“Uber is beneficial for everyone involved. Customers can now book Shikaras easily and confidently. Although it’s off-season, we’re optimistic about increased demand in summer and autumn. We’ve started with 10 Shikaras and will expand as needed.”
