Abu Dhabi [UAE], May 31 : In a landmark diplomatic achievement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has, for the first time, been elected President of the General Assembly of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and secured a seat on its Executive Board. This unprecedented win was shared with Malaysia after a closely contested election held during the Assembly meetings in Nairobi, Kenya.
The accomplishment reaffirms the UAE’s global leadership in sustainable urban development, housing innovation, and its commitment to advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11, which focuses on creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities.
A Recognition of UAE’s Urban Development Vision
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, hailed the victory as a testament to the nation’s strategic focus on housing and urban sustainability.
“This remarkable achievement reflects the vision and directives of the UAE’s wise leadership. Housing and urban development are fundamental pillars for social stability and quality of life,” said Al Mazrouei.
He highlighted the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, launched in 1999, as a cornerstone of the country’s efforts. The programme has significantly enhanced family stability and delivered sustainable housing to Emirati citizens.
“We are committed to continuing our contribution to global housing and urban planning. As President of the UN-Habitat General Assembly, the UAE will work closely with all 193 member states to develop sustainable and inclusive urban environments.”
Al Mazrouei emphasized that the UAE will use its leadership position to foster international collaboration, innovate in urban planning, and tackle global challenges such as rapid urbanization and climate change.
Driving Global Urban Innovation
Eng. Mohamed Al Mansouri, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, praised the election as a direct result of the UAE’s commitment to sustainable and smart urban housing systems.
“This success is a reflection of the UAE’s efforts to create innovative housing solutions aligned with global sustainability standards,” said Al Mansouri.
He commended the national team, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the UAE Embassy in Nairobi for their three-and-a-half-year campaign that led to this diplomatic milestone.
“We are ready to share our expertise in building diverse, inclusive, and innovative urban communities. Our presidency of the UN-Habitat General Assembly positions the UAE as a key player in shaping future global urban development policies.”
Looking Ahead
With its dual role as President and Executive Board member of UN-Habitat, the UAE is poised to strengthen its international influence, deepen global cooperation, and lead efforts to embed sustainability in urban planning.
“We consider this responsibility a great honour and an opportunity to further enhance the UAE’s international record,” Al Mazrouei stated.
“We will work hand in hand with all international partners to lead global urban transformation for a more inclusive and sustainable world.”
