SRINAGAR – A protracted gunfight in the Akhal woodland area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district has been going on for nine days. This is one of the longest counter-terrorism operations in the valley in a long time. On Saturday, the Army’s Chinar Corps said that two security men, Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, were killed in gunfire overnight.
The Chinar Corps honored the dead soldiers on X by saying, “Their bravery and dedication will always inspire us.” The Indian Army sends its heartfelt sympathies and stands with the families who are grieving. The operation is still going on.”
The coordinated operation, called “Operation Akhal,” started on August 1 after specific intelligence reports regarding terrorists being in the thick forest area. Two terrorists have died and 11 security people have been hurt since the operation started.
There have been short and severe firefights throughout the operation. Security authorities have sent in a variety of resources, such as drones and helicopters for aerial observation, and have drafted in para commandos to help find and kill the terrorists who are thought to be hiding deep in the jungle.
The Army’s Northern Commander, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, and Jammu and Kashmir Police Commissioner Nalin Prabhat are just a few of the high-ranking military and police officials who are keeping a careful eye on the situation. To keep the last terrorists from getting away, a tight cordon has been kept around the location. We are still waiting for more information on the operation that is going on.
