Two Bodies Found After American Airlines Plane Crashes Near Reagan National Airport With 64 Onboard

Washington, DC [US], January 30: A commercial airliner operated by PSA Airlines for American Airlines collided with a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday night, resulting in a crash into the Potomac River. At least two bodies have been recovered from the water, and authorities continue to search for more victims, according to WBAL TV.

The crash involved a PSA Airlines regional jet, operating as American Airlines Flight 5342, and a Sikorsky H-60 Army Blackhawk helicopter. The plane, with 60 passengers and four crew members aboard, had departed from Wichita, Kansas, while the helicopter, carrying three soldiers, came from Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Rescue teams are working overnight to search for the 60 people potentially involved.

US President Donald Trump issued a statement expressing condolences for the victims, saying, “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls, and thank you to our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”

The crash occurred just off the runways of Ronald Reagan National Airport, with debris scattered across the Potomac River. In response, all air traffic, including takeoffs and landings, was halted at the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the collision between the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet and the Army Blackhawk helicopter took place around 9 pm local time. Emergency personnel are actively engaged in recovery operations.

American Airlines confirmed that its flight from Wichita, Kansas, to Reagan National was involved in the incident and expressed support for those affected. Fireboats and emergency teams, including DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, are on the scene working to manage the search and recovery efforts.

US Vice President JD Vance urged citizens to pray for those involved, saying, “Please say a prayer for everyone involved in the mid-air collision near Reagan Airport this evening. We’re monitoring the situation, but for now, let’s hope for the best.”

US Senator Ted Cruz confirmed fatalities, though the exact number remains unknown. He shared on X, “I am closely monitoring the situation at DCA. While we don’t yet know how many were lost, we know there are fatalities. Please join Heidi and me in praying for all involved as the search and rescue continues.”

Authorities have stated that more information will be provided once the cause of the crash is determined.
