A high-stakes strategic conversation between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made many hopeful that a peace pact to stop the war and protect Ukraine’s security may not be too far off. The summit, which was attended by a number of important European leaders, made it seem like everyone was working together to find a solution.
The most important thing that came out of the talks was President Trump’s statement that European countries would now “provide” security guarantees for Ukraine, with the White House acting as a coordinator. This changes who is in charge and puts Europe at the center of Ukraine’s long-term security policy.
President Zelenskyy’s comments suggested that Ukraine wants to buy a lot of American-made military equipment, with European countries providing the money. However, the exact terms of these guarantees are still unclear. It is now expected that the deal would be made official and signed in the next seven to ten days, maybe after a meeting between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This “coalition of the willing,” as it has been called, seems determined to keep pledges that were never kept before. French President Emmanuel Macron laid out a plan for the future that has two parts. He said that the first thing that needs to be done is to build up and strengthen the Ukrainian army by adding more soldiers and better weapons. The next phase would be to set up “reassurance forces” made up of troops from the UK, France, Germany, and Turkey. Macron said that these troops would quietly carry out operations to keep the calm and stop future attacks without being on the front lines.
People are really happy about the meeting, especially since it came after a recent visit between Trump and Putin in Alaska that laid the stage for these talks. There is still no definitive agreement, but the evident move toward a European-led security framework with American support marks a new and possibly important step in the efforts to end the conflict.
